Mercat de Mercats 2024
On October 18, 19, and 20, Plaça de Catalunya hosted the 13th edition of the Mercat de Mercats Fair, the major celebration of Barcelona's markets, local and sustainable products, and gastronomy. This event provides a space for encounters and for sharing market-based culinary culture, led by merchants, chefs, and experts. It highlights the role of markets as suppliers of fresh, quality products, champions of local trade, and promoters of healthy eating, the Mediterranean diet, and conscious shopping. Nineteen stalls from nine markets offered fresh products from different categories (fruits and vegetables, legumes, specialties, charcuterie, olives, salted fish, seafood, and meats), along with twelve restaurateurs.
This initiative is led by the Barcelona City Council through the Municipal Institute of Barcelona Markets (IMMB), in collaboration with the Federation of Barcelona Municipal Markets (FEMM).
Shopping at markets promotes a circular economy, helps reduce the ecological footprint by offering local and seasonal products, and supports the fight against food waste. For this reason, the Mercat de Mercats Fair seeks to highlight the role of the city's 43 markets - 39 food and 4 non-food - as neighborhood hubs, economic engines, and spaces for socialization, gathering, and learning. The fair celebrates sustainable culinary culture with fresh products, a dining area, and over 20 activities in the event’s activity space.
Mercat de Mercats is one of the most important events held annually by the Barcelona Municipal Markets Institute. Intermèdia managed the event’s communication before, during, and after the fair, in coordination with the IMMB and the Barcelona City Council. In addition to sharing the latest news about the fair, it was essential to spotlight what truly matters: the merchants and restaurateurs representing Barcelona's markets. The activities held in the Activities Room also played a key role, including showcookings by Michelin-starred chefs Jordi Artal (Cinc Sentits), Fran Agudo (Montbar), and Yoshikazu Suto (Suto).
Throughout the three days of the fair, an Intermèdia team was on-site at Plaça de Catalunya to interview merchants and restaurateurs, cover children’s activities, cover the workshops and showcookings in the Activities Room, write articles, select photos, and more.
